HTC Board of Education Report – January 24, 2011
Doris S. Turner, Chief Administrative Officer

Faith Development  - The priests, high school department chairperson Jan Jacobs and I met and developed the Mass schedule for the Spring semester.  HTC appreciates the continual support our priests give to our school system.

        2.   Jan Jacobs, Mary Sue Pote and I will be attending the Diocesan Meeting for high school religious teachers/principals on Feb. 18.

        3. Catholic Schools Week plans have been made for all buildings.

        4. Students made “Right to Life” posters for the march on Saturday, January 21.   The “Right to Life” Mass at the 7-12 building was January 20.  Father Spring gave an excellent homily on the importance of being active in the support of all life.  Religion classes had various activities and discussions concerning respect for life issues and Catholic doctrines.  Roe vs Wade was discussed in various class settings.

School Leadership    Policy books have been distributed.

Please bring your copy with you to the Jan. 24 meeting. I have the priest copies and will give them out at the meeting.  The six p.m. work session will continue with updates.

         2.     The School  Improvement Advisory Committee met on Friday, January 7, 2011 and specifically discussed progress on long-term goals in the areas of academic student performance in math, science, reading and social studies;  special needs programs, the fine arts department, and student achievement as far as long term goals of the HTC system over the past years since the birth of HTC.  We also discussed the progress of the long term goal of continuing to outreach all Catholic schools in SE Iowa and bordering parishes in Illinois in terms of long-term planning.  Please refer to attached addendums for more information on the State Site visit in March.

         3.    The HTC committee on Health and Wellness met on January 13 at the elementary. Dr. Roy Tinguely will give an update report.

        4.     I have asked Melissa and Sara to look into families for the Preschool and kindergarten for the next school year and beyond.

        5.    Donna McVeigh will be provided the trend data, etc. from the Iowa tests.  She will be analyzing information with classroom Teachers at the various buildings so HTC can develop our Student learning goals for immediate and long-term planning.

       6.     You should have received some legislative updates through Gary.  Our diocesan principals meeting in January was cancelled due to weather.  I will keep you posted as I received Info.

Student Life/PR, etc.  – We are into Homecoming week at the 7-12 building

            Hopefully the weather will cooperate.

       2.     Activities are planned for Catholic Schools Week. Donna’s report Contains some of the marketing work that is being done.  Besides the regular student projects, etc. we have some radio coverage and the marketing office is recognizing some HTC supporters at the ballgames.

       3.     Thanks to Shelley and Donna for nominating me for the FM Citizen of the Year.  I appreciate the sentiment and it was good PR for HTC.  Also thanks to the “Catholic Messnenger” for the nice write-up announcing my retirement.  The staff at the “Catholic Messenger” are very supportive of Holy Trinity.

      4.     I appreciate all of you who come to so many of the student activities at all of the different buildings and each of you contribute a great deal of time and effort to the school system.  Unless one has been a board member or an administrator one doesn’t understand the time requirements.

Misc. Info.

Make-Up Day for the Students – I talked with Gary by phone and we are recommending using the March 21 date for the snow make up day.  March 21 is a teacher in-service day and I can meet with the teachers after school a couple of times to make up this professional development time.   The February 21 day is a holiday for everyone and many parents have things already planned, and I also feel that the staff needs the 3-day weekend as well.  This winter has really been difficult so far and it doesn’t look like it may get better any time soon.  We can discuss this at the meeting if you have questions comments, feel differently, etc. There will need to be a motion  to adopt whatever you decide to do.  Thanks.

I have sent the recommendations for the spring/summer sports.  Baseball needs to be advertised and filled.
