Highlights from 2009

Here are a few notable highlights of the past year’s “Grow An Acre Program”:

·         The program had 31 total acres grown (11 acres of Corn, 20 acres of Beans)

·         We had 6 new growers, with a total of 13 participating growers

·         We had 17 new sponsors, with a total of 49 participating sponsors

·         We had 10 different grain buyers at this year’s auction with significant participation from Merschman Seeds, Inc., Mt. Hamil Elevator and Lumber, and Chem Gro, Inc.

·         Despite a down grain market, the average price per bushel of corn/beans was higher at this year’s auction then any previous year (Thank you to all who participated in the Auction!!!!)

·         This year’s grain auction was up nearly $3,800, raising over $25,000, an increase of near 15% from last year

·         Brian and Mary Burk came forward after the auction and donated back all of their “Grow An Acre” sponsorship money

How does the “Grow An Acre” program work?

1)   Merschman Seeds, Inc. donates to HTC Schools up to 100 bags of Seed Beans and 50 bags of Seed Corn.

2)   Local farmers/landowners agree to plant the donated bag of Merschman Corn or Beans.

3)   Supporters of HTC (Individuals, Families, Businesses, Memorials, Etc.) sponsor an acre to offset the farmer/landowner’s input costs associated with growing an acre of crop (fertilizer, planting costs, harvesting costs, etc).

4)   In the Fall at harvest time, the Local Farmers/Landowners donate his or her crop from that sponsored acre to HTC Schools.

5)   HTC Schools auction the crop (200 bushel of Corn or 50 bushel of Beans) produced by the Local Farmer/Landowner at HTC’s God’s Portion Day auction in Ft. Madison.

6)   Supporters of HTC (Individuals, Families, Businesses, Farmers, Grain Elevators, Etc.) purchase the grain at HTC’s God's Portion Day auction.

7)         Local Farmers/Landowners deliver the purchased grain to a local elevator.

8)   The local Elevator (Chem Gro, Mt. Hamil Elevator, Colusa Elevator, Quality Plus Feeds, Etc.) mails a check for market value to the grain buyer

9)   100% of the auction proceeds of each acre are donated directly to HTC Schools.

How can I participate in the program?  What is my commitment?

1)   I can donate an acre(s) of ground and plant an acre of Merschman Seed Beans or Seed Corn.

a.   I would receive 1 bag of seed corn or seed beans per acre donated.

b.   I would receive $400.00 per acre of Corn or $300 per acre of beans in the Fall from HTC to offset the input costs of the associated acre.  These funds are collected from Grow An Acre sponsors and dispersed by HTC.

c.   I would donate my corn or soybean crop to HTC Schools (200 Bushel/Acre of Corn or 50 Bushel/Acre of Beans)

d.   I would deliver 200 Bushel/Acre of Corn or 50 Bushel/Acre of Beans to one of the listed elevators.

2)   I can sponsor an acre (or part of an acre) by donating $400 per acre of Corn or $300 per acre of Beans.  (¼ an Acre = $100.00, ½ an Acre = $200.00, ¾ = $300.00, 1 Acre = $400.00 of Corn)

a.   I would mail a check to HTC Schools for the "Grow An Acre" Program

3)      I can purchase grain at HTC’s God’s Portion Day auction in Ft. Madison .

a.   I would bid and purchase the grain at the Ft. Madison auction ($10.00/Bushel of Beans x 50 Bushel = $500)

b.   I would pay HTC Schools for grain ($500 for 50 Bushel of Beans)

c.   I would receive a check from a participating elevator for the fair market value of the grain upon delivery by the farmer ($9.47/Bushel x 50 Bushel = $473.50)

d.   My total donation would be $26.50 ($500.00 auction price - $473.50 market value = $26.50) and HTC Schools would receive $500 for the grain.
